Overview

The Rhine Valley Walk is the gentlest route in Liechtenstein — flat, well-signed, and suitable for almost any fitness level. It follows the eastern bank of the Rhine from Vaduz south to Balzers, passing through vineyards, riverside meadows, and the Gutenberg Castle ruins above Balzers.

This is a point-to-point walk: start in Vaduz, finish in Balzers, and take the bus back. Or reverse it if the bus schedule suits.

The Route

Vaduz Town Centre → Rhine bank: Head west from the old town toward the river. The trail is marked with the national hiking sign (yellow diamond). Pick up the Rhine path at the crossing near the sports centre.

Rhine path south: The path follows the flood protection dyke for most of the route. The Rhine is impressive here — wide, grey-green, powerful. Watch for grey herons and kingfishers in the reeds.

Triesen: The path passes through Triesen’s small centre at the 4km mark. There’s a bakery and a bench. Good stop.

Balzers and Gutenberg Castle: Balzers has a beautiful medieval castle on a rocky knoll above the village. It’s not open to the public but the exterior and village square are worth 20 minutes. The bus stop is in the village centre.

Conditions & Season

  • Year-round — this trail is accessible in all seasons
  • Can be muddy in spring after snowmelt
  • Hot in July–August; start early or carry extra water

How to Get There

To Vaduz: From Buchs (Switzerland) or Sargans (Switzerland), take the regional bus to Vaduz. Both are on the mainline from Zürich.

Return from Balzers: Liechtenstein Bus line 11 back to Vaduz. Runs every 30 minutes.
